Yesterday we had our volunteer orientation and it went very well. after that Jerod the Australian and I hung out in arusha town which is very crazy. everyone comes up and shakes your hand and tries to sell you something, it is very intense. we went to a local bar and drank and played pool with an African high school teacher. He was hilarious. He told the following joke after a few castles (a great Tanzanian beer): "in Tanzania they pretend to pay us, so we pretend to teach" then we went and watched a Rwanda genocide trial at the UN building, which was very surreal. you get to put on translator headphones and watch through a glass wall. after that we met up with a huge group of volunteers and partied at a nijreo hookah bar all night.
Today I went and "taught" at the Linde "school". no doors, no windows, no books, and the teachers don't speak English or teach at all. our "bus" was packed 25+ kids and four volunteers on a 12 person bus. it was insane. the kids are sooo cute and most of them are orphans so it is kind of sad. I really don't think that i will get to do much "teaching" but it should still be a great experience. we are going to go out and get some beers and then meet our host family for dinner. i booked a 4 day safari next thurs-sun, then Monday I'm off to Vietnam.
